The future of technology is here with our lives becoming ever more connected. The latest arm of which, becoming more common in our homes, is being termed the Internet of Things (IoT).
What is the internet of things?
IoT in simple terms is the process of connecting everything with the internet. So anything from fridges to microwaves to even forks. The idea being that having these devices with the ability to “talk” to each other will make our lives easier and better.
When would I use it?
Let’s take a coffee machine as an example. You can schedule your machine to have made your morning cuppa for when you roll out of bed bleary-eyed. Hot coffeeWith some (mainly in America at the moment) you can even set your coffee machine going from wherever you are from an app on your phone. So if you’ve been for a walk and need something to warm you up, just press a few buttons and your coffee will be waiting for you. You’ll receive a push notification when it’s ready, to remind you not to let it get cold.
We’ve all got to the supermarket ready for a weekly shop and forgotten what we have in the fridge. If you’re lucky you can ring someone to check for you otherwise it’s a gamble. Do you overbuy in case you’ve run out or risk having to brave the crowds again later in the week?
The “smart fridge” from Samsung has cameras inside that will take photos every time the doors shut and store the photos in an app ready for you to check. It even has speakers and a TV built in, and to top it all off it will keep your food cold!
Of course the most popular of these technologies is the Amazon echo or Alexa. Simply by using voice commands, if you have the right settings and equipment, you can run your house. From playing music to ordering more Tupperware, Alexa looks to be the next big thing in people’s homes.
